der junge tizian wurde von giorgione beeinflusst , es ist daher nicht verwunderlich, dass dieses werk gegenstand einer wissenschaftlichen debatte über seine zuordnung zu einem der beiden künstler war . Das thema ist nicht ganz klar, scheint aber zyklische obertöne zu haben . die schlafenden kinder werden durch amor vor verletzungen oder tod durch den taumelnden toten baumstumpf geschützt , die dann ihre leidenschaft als junge erwachsene befeuern, aber alter und tod nicht verhindern können . Das nebeneinander des weisen mit zwei schädeln mit dem toten baum und dem schützenden amor lässt auf ein muster der wiedergeburt schließen .
